Thus we have started a tradition of creating holiday activities that are environmentally friendly and that our friends can enjoy with their loved ones. This year’s activity, Alien’s for the Holidays, uses invasive plant species to make holiday wreaths and centre pieces, thereby giving a present to the native plants in our neighborhoods.

To enjoy this activity or last year’s Winter Festivities for the Birds, please find them on our website at www.ahimsamedia.com/educators.htm. Once there click on “Winter Activities” and then on the activity of your choice or both.

Enjoy! She tells us about a really wild and wet pumpkin event that they have in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Apparently people actually hollow out 500 lb pumpkins and row or use a motor to race them across the local lake! Check it out - http://worldsbiggestpumpkins.com. This years largest pumpkin at the event weighed in at 1202 lbs!

Here’s an idea for your jack-o-lanterns. If the holes on them aren’t too low, before you compost them, try and figure out a way of racing them over a local pond. As you will not be able to climb inside this pumpkin, you will need to develop some method of propulsion for this unique water vessel. They may sink, but hey you were going to compost them anyhow!

Have fun!

Erica Hargreave

Posted in General Discussion | No Comments »

A Hauntingly Good Tribute to Hogwarts
October 31st, 2007

Over the past few months we have been posting tributes to seven years of hauntingly good times exploring the magical world of Hogwarts with that famous young wizard, Harry Potter. law to be with their children while they are acting. They sacrifice a huge amount in their own life’s to be with their children each day on-set. Occasionally, I have played the role of the “parent” for some child actors and it is not an easy job. Unlike the rest of the crew, you have no set job, yet you always have to be aware of where the child is and their safety. It can be exhausting. And as for reading papers and sitting in lawn chairs – I can’t think of a more ridiculous comment. What do you expect these parents to do while they spend 8 – 10 hours day after day -->

Ahimsa Media’s educational division is proud to boast that we have many highly creative, inspired individuals on staff who are certified teachers. With their passion for education and learning, these teachers enjoy the opportunity to work with children, in addition to creating educational media for children. Many of these teachers also work as actors, writers, and researchers in the film and television industry, so they are familiar with production and the work day challenges faced by child actors.

We are delighted to offer the services of these teachers for:

teaching and tutoring

child coordination

chaperoning child actors on set.

These teachers include people like Paul Cordy, a supporting lead in FUNtastic Science and science and educational consultant for Ahimsa Media, whom is also a Earth and Ocean Scientist and Teacher. As a teacher, Paul is an incredibly passionate individual with a gift to inspire and motivate his students to learn. Paul’s specialties include upper level physics and math. He is also fluent in French and can teach Spanish.

For more information on Paul and our other tutors, please visit our set tutoring page at: http://www.ahimsamedia.com/tutoring.htm .

<a practical reason for the title of this post. In the last month, two new lesson ideas have been posted to our educator’s page - http://www.ahimsamedia.com/educators.htm - one entitled Greenhouse Gases and one Winter Festivities for the Birds.

Greenhouse Gases as it’s name suggests is on the Greenhouse Effect and fits both the science and social studies curriculum. It gives educators background information on the greenhouse effect and some hands-on activities to make it understandable to kids, while at the same time empowering them to make a difference.

Winter Festivities for the Birds discusses the challenges that animals face in winter and creates a bit of a holiday feast for the birds in your neighborhood! Parents - this lesson is full of activities that you can do with your children at home, while they are enjoying their winter break. Teachers - this is a fun science / art activitiy that can been done with elementary and preschool children at any time this winter.

Enjoy!

Erica

Posted in <a
